The “art of defending” is something pundits like to claim has been lost in recent years.
Whilst some “street-wise” elements may have left the game, along with changes in how games are managed by referees, defending now is arguably far more intricate than ever before.
In addition to being expected to play out from the back when under pressure, defenders have to deal with well-developed phases of play and teams that use in-depth analysis to identify and exploit their weaknesses.
This tactical theory will analyse how modern defenders defend their box from the wide area, prepare themselves to handle crosses, and react to the ball in central areas.
The analysis will use examples from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, including clubs like Bayern Munich, Boca Juniors, and Auckland City, to show how players position their body shape to give themselves the best chance of seeing, predicting, and dealing with danger.
Nayef Aguerd is a 29-year-old centre-back playing for Real Sociedad on loan from West Ham United.
With his loan period coming to an end this summer, Aguerd has been linked with many teams wanting to secure his services.
One of the most interested teams who are pushing to get a deal with the Irons are the Italian side, Juventus.
The idea is to make a swap deal, transferring Aguerd to Juventus and Daniele Rugani to West Ham.
The deal will be beneficial for both the Moroccan defender and Juventus, as I Bianconeri are in need of defensive reinforcements; Aguerd would certainly represent one of those.
At the same time, it is a risk he needs to take to become a more powerful defender and impose himself within Igor Tudor’s formation.
This tactical analysis and scout report aims to further explore Aguerd’s defensive and playmaking skills and evaluate his possible addition to a team like Juventus.
The analysis will also focus on comparing Aguerd with the defenders who are actually at Juventus, as this will help determine whether Aguerd has the standards needed to get sufficient playing time with Juventus.
