Very few footballing nations can claim a defensive lineage as rich as Italy‘s.
From Paolo Maldini‘s elegance to Fabio Cannavaro‘s grit to Franco Baresi‘s authority, Italian defending has long been an art form.
Now, a new name is beginning to echo through the corridors of calcio tradition.
That name is Parma‘s 18-year-old sensation: Giovanni Leoni.
Though Giovanni Leoni is still a teenager, the Parma defender is already regarded as one of the most gifted defenders in Serie A.
That’s why there is currently an enormous continental scramble for Leoni’s signature, for a reported fee of €40m, including the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona, Inter Milan and AC Milan.
The interest from these giants isn’t new; Leoni has been on the radar of Europe’s elite well before shining in Serie A last season under Cristian Chivu.
In the 2022/2023 season, Leoni was the youngest professional footballer in Italy at the time, having debuted for Padova in Serie C at the age of just 16 years and 3 months.
The Rome-born defender then got his big move to Sampdoria last year when the €1.5m option in his loan contract was exercised; however, he was immediately sold to then-newly promoted Parma.
This player analysis and scout report will examine the Giovanni Leoni style of play, his technical and physical profile, and his potential role within Carlos Cuesta‘s tactical setup at Parma during the 2025/2026 season and beyond.
Simon Sohm promises to be a fantastic summer signing for Fiorentina after he was instrumental for Parma in recent seasons.
La Viola completed the permanent transfer for €15m, which further confirms the club’s intent to strengthen and become serious contenders for UEFA Champions League qualification next season.
Head coach Stefano Pioli has already expressed his ambition to reach that target, and many of the players, including Sohm himself, have declared that they will be trying their best to make the top four.
This ambition needs to be matched by serious work, a very organised team, and reinforcements in weaker areas.
Up until now, Fiorentina have been doing well in the transfer market.
They have already signed a veteran striker who will improve the squad in Edin Džeko.
In addition, midfield and defensive reinforcements have been added with Jacopo Fazzini and Eman Košpo, who joined the team recently.
With the addition of Sohm, Fiorentina are already becoming much more powerful than last season in terms of squad depth and player choices for each position.
They know that a few other targeted signings would greatly help the team, especially on both wings.
This player analysis and scout report aims to explore Sohm’s playmaking and goalscoring traits thoroughly while identifying his possible roles at Fiorentina and how his playmaking and shooting abilities can help the team perform better.
The analysis will also reserve a section that looks at his defensive level to determine whether he is useful in both the defensive and the attacking phases or solely when the team is in possession of the ball.
