Liverpool vs Real Madrid has become something of a modern UEFA Champions League rivalry to look forward to.

Real Madrid have always seemed to have Liverpool’s number, inflicting some famous and painful losses.

The animosity stems from the infamous 2018 Champions League Final, in which Mohamed Salah was injured by Sergio Ramos, and Real Madrid went on to win the Champions League, completing an unprecedented three-peat.

Further fuel to the fire was added when Real Madrid once again usurped Liverpool in the 2022 Champions League Final and pinched one of Liverpool’s best academy talents in Trent-Alexander Arnold this past summer.

Lately, though, Liverpool have got the better of Los Blancos as they overpowered them last season in a gloriously chaotic match, winning 2-0 with Anfield roaring behind them.

Ahead of this week’s clash, Arne Slot was under huge pressure, but he successfully outsmarted Xabi Alonso as the Reds overwhelmed and thoroughly beat the La Liga giants.

Be it through their pressing, the restoration of the Dominic Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch trifecta in midfield or Real Madrid’s lack of penetration, Liverpool were the better team, earning a decisive win and lifting the pressure off Slot.

In this tactical analysis, we will analyse the crucial points as to how Liverpool were the deserved winners.

The most exciting contest in Gameweek 4 of the UEFA Champions League saw Club Brugge and Barcelona play out a thrilling 3-3 draw, with a multitude of chances at both ends of the pitch.

The draw leaves some question marks for Hansi Flick’s side, who have now won only three of their last seven matches and sit outside the top eight of the Champions League table.

Included in those seven matches was an El Clásico loss to Real Madrid and a shocking 4-1 loss to Sevilla.

Nicky Hayen’s team have pulled off some historic upsets in the past, like a 4-1 statement win over AS Monaco earlier in this Champions League campaign.

However, they were coming off a 2-1 loss to Atalanta and a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich in their previous Champions League matches.

Barcelona dominated possession, but their high line allowed Brugge numerous high-quality chances.

As a result, Barcelona had to overcome a deficit three different times to level the match.

In this tactical analysis, we will look into how Barcelona’s tactics in the final third were able to exploit Club Brugge’s low block and how Club Brugge exposed Barcelona’s high line to score three goals.

Olympique de Marseille hosted Atalanta BC in Gameweek 4 of the UEFA Champions League at the Stade Vélodrome, and the game resulted in a crucial win for the Italian side.

Thanks to their single goal of the match, Atalanta secured their second win in this phase, following victories over Club Brugge, a draw with Slavia Praha, and a loss to PSG.

The team’s results suggest that their qualification hopes are still alive, given that they actually have seven points and are within the knockout play-offs zone, especially if they continue to get positive results in the upcoming games.

For Marseille, however, things are becoming a bit more complicated, as they have only won one game against Ajax, while losing the three other games against Real Madrid, Sporting CP, and now Atalanta.

This puts Marseille in 25th spot with three points.

It will be crucial for the French side to earn points in their upcoming games in order to climb the standings and compete for a play-off spot, if they plan to continue their European journey this season.

That said, their mission will not be easy at all, as they will face tough teams like Newcastle United and Liverpool, in addition to two tricky games against Club Brugge and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

In this tactical analysis, our focus will mainly be centred on Atalanta’s effective high-pressing system and how they dealt with the created attacking situations following their recoveries.
